Imagine my disappointment when I forgot my wallet at home on Thursday, the day of Big Red Eats Green. Even though my absent-mindedness precluded enjoying delicious local food from the vendors, I swung by the event anyway. (And now I have extra incentive to visit the vendors at their restaurants/stores/farmer's market booths!) Since my personal project is based on local food, this event was a great informational resource for me.
I really enjoyed learning more from the student groups addressing local food issues. Since I spend almost all my time on campus in the SPEA building, Big Red Eats Green opened my eyes to some of the great student groups at IU.
I was disappointed to find out that I could only buy a share from the Stranger's Hill CSA from May to October--not exactly conducive to student membership, since most of us are only in town for about half of that time. Plus, I would have had to register in May...but I can stop by their market booth to buy produce instead!
Fortuntately, though, I was reacquainted with this resource, which I had picked up when I moved to Bloomington last year but forgot about until I saw it again at Big Red Eats Green.
It has a whole list of CSAs that may offer more flexible member schedules, plus an index of local growers and the the products they sell--especially important now that my stock of milk and bread from Kroger are gone and I'm left to search for a local alternative.
I picked these up on the way home...stay tuned for the next step in my local food/preservation journey!
